Abstract: Background Polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) are in multidirectional interaction with inflammation and immunity. Diverse interactions of PMN with circulatory network, pathological sites substances, blood cells, complement system, coagulation system and recovery system create PMN with different characteristics, i. e. in different functional states (FS). Some hematological indices are markers for systemic inflammatory response (SIR).
Methods Pregnancy of normotensives, gestational hypertensition and normotensive nonpregnant women were investigated. Zymosan stimuled whole blood PMN was measured chemiluminescence (CL). CL kinetic curve parameters were calculated with time probabilistic model of CL, describing PMN with different functional state. Indices of albumin, fibrinogen, red blood cell distribution width, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, platelets, platelet-lymphocyte ratio, mean platelet volume were derived from auto analyzers.
Results Altered PMN parameters characterizing primed FS was observed. PMN pregnant women’s CL is characterized by functional readiness of PMN reacting quickly by stimuli with combination of “effectiveness”, “velocity” and “capacity” forms the "stand-by" FS according to the component analysis. In pregnant normotensive and gestational hypertensive women is registered a primed FS (stand-by state) of neutrophils vs healthy non-pregnant women neutrophils in resting state. Hematological indices for SIR during pregnancy agree with primed functional state by the CL methodology.
These data support the concept that during the pregnancy is developed SIR in concordance with the registered primed functional state of the CL methodology.
Conclusion In pregnant women with and without gestational hypertension, we registered PMN in primed functional state compared with PMN in resting state of normotensive nonpregnant women. During the pregnancy is developed low-grade systemic inflammation.
