IN MEMORIAM Assoc. Professor Stoyan Stoytchev, PhD (28.06.1943-22.08.2025)
Assoc. Prof. Miglena Kirilova
Abstract: On August 22, 2025, Assoc. Prof. Stoyan Stoytchev, PhD, a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Series on Biomechanics, passed away. Assoc. Prof. Stoytchev is the author of numerous publications in the field of biomechanics and one of the founders of the Bulgarian Society of Biomechanics. His research and publication activities are in the fields of mechanics, biomechanics, experimental methods in biomechanics, modeling of biological environments and processes, biofilms, modeling of soft tissues and bioprocess systems. He also applied biomechanical methods in forensics. Assoc. Prof. Stoytchev worked and under his leadership, research was conducted in the field of mechanical interaction between arterial vessels and their substitutes; biomechanical study of arterial aneurysm; biomechanical study of synthetic substitutes for biological soft tissues - vascular prostheses and hernia meshes; experimental study and modeling of basic phenomena in bioprocess systems with spontaneously immobilized biomass; mechanical aspects of the reliability of intestinal peristalsis and anastomosis; knee and upper limb problems; problems in ophthalmology; mathematical modeling of blood flow in a vascular graft, in intracranial aneurysm, compression models of articular cartilage, etc. Under his leadership, a new device for static and dynamic study of the elastic characteristics of blood arteries was developed, and a new device for static and dynamic study of the in vitro viscoelastic characteristics of biological tissues. After the founding of the Bulgarian Society of Biomechanics, he participated in and organised international forums on biomechanics, "Days of Biomechanics"
