Synthesis and characterization of a bioactive scaffold for bone tissue regeneration based on poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)
F. Haddani, A. El Maliki
Abstract: The aim of bone tissue engineering is to regenerate bone loss, especially after a severe fracture or tumor surgery. During this reconstruction process, the electrical activity in the cells is important for the secretion of a new native extracellular matrix. Poly (Vinylidene Fluoride) PVDF is a piezoelectric polymer that has great potential as a biomaterial for bone tissue regeneration. Thanks to its ability to deliver electrical signals under mechanical stress, it can stimulate tissue regeneration by providing the substrate for cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. In this work, we are interested in improving the bioactivity of PVDF-based scaffolds by incorporating the as-synthesized HA or HA/ZnO nanoparticles. The impact of nanoparticle loading and elaboration techniques on scaffold properties such as pore size, mechanical behavior as well as the content of electro-active phases were investigated. The enhancement of the piezoelectric β-phase was confirmed by using Fourier Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction.
