The temporomandibular joint reaction and procedure of the occlusion correction
V.N. Nikitin, Y.I. Nyashin, V.M. Tverier
Abstract: This article analyses the results of applying the hypothesis about the position of the point of application of the temporomandibular reaction and its effect on both - the masticatory muscles forces and on the direction and quantity of the joint reaction when the occlusion changes. Correction of the occlusion is performed in accordance with the developed procedure. The procedure consists of the existing method of correction and biomechanical calculations. Biomechanical calculations are based on quantitative measures of the human dentofacial system. These quantitative measures include the forces of the chewing muscles and the reactions of the temporomandibular joints. Muscular forces and associated articular reactions affect the stress distribution and deformations in the bones of the mandible and the tissues of the temporomandibular joints. The determination of the forces of the masticatory muscles and the reactions of the temporomandibular joints is performed with a known maximum compression force of the jaws and its application point using the following hypothesis: the point of application of the reaction belongs to the contact surface of the condyle with the disc and the segment that originates from the given point and is counted along the normal in the narrow space of the joint. In the present work, the forces of the chewing muscles and reactions of the temporomandibular joints are determined without using this hypothesis. The coordinates of the points of application of temporomandibular joint reactions are defined as the solution of the minimax problem. A comparison of the coordinates determined using the hypothesis about the point of application of the joint reaction and obtained as a solution of the minimax problem is performed. The obtained data show that the coordinates of the points of application of joint reactions in these two methods are similar, but the value of temporomandibular reactions in the second case is less. In this article, as in others, studies on the effect of the position of the point of application of the temporomandibular joint reaction on the masticatory muscles and the reactions themselves are made in the sagittal plane. In the future, it is proposed to conduct research and take into account the change in position of the point of application of the temporomandibular joint reaction in the median plane.
