Biosorption of acid dye using Quercus coccifera ash: characterization and kinetic modeling
H.Veleva
Abstract: Combustion of coal, wood agricultural residue and peat has generated large amounts of ashes in recent decades. Forest species ash is produced by combustion of living vegetation and litter in natural or prescribed fires of plant residue. Wood ash has been used in a variety of applications such as: ameliorate acid soils, excellent source of potash (potassium), binding agent, a glazing base for ceramics, a road base, an additive in cement production, an alkaline material for neutralization of wastes, etc.
Use of various dyes in order to color the products is a common practice in textile industry. Acid dyes represent one of the most challenging classes of pollutants requiring removal from wastewater streams due to their non-biodegradability and toxicity.
This study was carried out for the utilization of dominant Greek forest species ash as low cost biosorbent for the removal of acid dye from aqueous solution and to establish it as a standard wastewater treatment process. Biosorption of acid dye Erionil Marine Blau (EMB) onto forest species ash was investigated.
The biosorbent material was prepared by dry ashing at 600° C using a standard method (ASTM D1102-84). The forest specie examined was: Quercus coccifera (Holly oak).
The effect of initial sorbate concentration and biosorbent mass on the kinetics of biosorption were evaluated. The experimental kinetic results were used for modeling, from the pseudo-first and pseudo-second order kinetic equations. Equilibrium adsorption isotherms were investigated. The equilibrium adsorption behavior was examined by applying Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models. The equilibrium data fitted very well to Langmuir adsorption model. The highest extend of EMB uptake determined in the recent study was 84 %. The study confirms that the forest species ash can be used as biosorbent for the removal of acid dyes from its aqueous solution.
