Optimization of wheelchair with standers
D. Pradon, Y. Traore, K. Debray, P. Lestriez, R. Taiar
Abstract: The wheelchair has undergone a considerable evolution; however, several of its users and stakeholders affirm that several parameters require improvement, in particular with regard to the mechanics, ergonomics, the weight, the design and the versatility of the pieces of apparatus. The studies carried out by the various research groups for the improvement of these aspects only aim at giving wheelchair users a greater level of independence than currently available on the personal or professional level. The aim of this study is to develop a new concept of the wheelchair characterized by a compromise between the propelled manual wheelchair, with its various appreciated applications, and the standing wheelchair, bulky and, in particular, very heavy. For the design we created a mechanical model. The model validation was realized by mechanical simulation. In conclusion, the various numerical results enabled us to propose a new wheelchair with a best kinematic mobility while being lighter with sufficient mechanical strength.
