Medical Students Perceptions and Educational Impact of the Elective Course AI in Medicine

Abstract: Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate medical students’ perceptions, attitudes and educational outcomes related to the elective course “Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Medicine” introduced in the Medical Doctor (MD) program at the Faculty of Medicine, European University. Materials and Methods: An anonymous voluntary survey was conducted among medical students who completed the elective course “AI in Medicine” during the autumn semester of the 2025-2026 academic year. The questionnaire assessed students’ perceptions of the course, its relevance to medical education and its impact on their understanding of AI applications, limitations and ethical considerations in healthcare. Participation was voluntary and responses were collected anonymously. Results: A total of 58 medical students participated in the survey. The results indicated high levels of student satisfaction with the course and strong support for integrating AI education into medical curricula. Most participants reported that the course improved their understanding of AI applications in healthcare and its potential clinical benefits. The majority of students believed that AI could significantly improve patient care. However, they also recognized potential risks associated with AI use in medicine without appropriate regulation, training and ethical oversight. Students expressed interest in expanding practical and specialty-specific AI topics in future versions of the course. Discussion: The findings suggest that medical students recognize the growing importance of AI in healthcare and value structured educational opportunities that introduce them to AI technologies and their implications for clinical practice. Conclusion: The study highlights strong student support for integrating AI education into medical training and emphasizes the need for further development of practical and clinically oriented AI courses within medical curricula.
