Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the effect of basic massage techniques used in European massage on the mechanical properties of trapezius muscle at rest applying the developed procedure to students. Materials and methods: 89 undergraduate healthy students (41 males and 42 females, age 19-24 years) were recruited for the study. Biomechanical and viscoelastic parameters frequency (F [Hz]), decrement (D [log]), stiffness (S [N/m]), relaxation time (R [ms]) and creepability (C [De]) of the upper part of muscle trapezius were obtained in relaxed sitting position on the right and the left sides sequentially pre- and after each of the massage techniques. Repeated measures ANOVA with 7 time points and Pearson correlation coefficient between initial and final values of F, D, S, R and C were conducted to evaluate the effect of the different massage techniques. Results: All measured and acquired parameter data demonstrate statistically significant differences in the different time points with pick values after friction, kneading and percussion and drop after final massage techniques, but without reaching the initial values. Discussion: The obtained experimental data clearly demonstrate the change of the biomechanical parameters of the trapezius muscle (measured by MyotonPro device) under the influence of massage techniques. Conclusion: European massage techniques influence oscillation frequency (F), stiffness(S), decrement (elasticity) (D), relaxation time (R) and creep (C) of trapezius muscle. Massage could be effective treatment for reducing muscle tension and stiffness.
