Effect of antibacterial monomer (MDPB) on the bond strength of human dentin to adhesives and dental restorative materials: a systematic review
E. Koytchev, N. Antonova
Abstract: Restorative materials in modern dentistry should exhibit “bio-active” properties. Among them, the antibacterial effects are sought after as one of the important features. The idea and main goal have been to develop resin-based restoratives, which possess antibacterial activity. For this purpose, an antibacterial monomer MDPB (12 methacryloyloxydodecylpyridinium bromide) has been developed and incorporated into the world’s first commercially available antibacterial adhesive system. Since then, attempts have been made to incorporate MDPB in various materials used in restorative dentistry. The aim of this systematic review was to summarize the findings from different studies on the influence of MDPB inclusion on the bond strength of dentin to various adhesives and restorative materials. A literature search in the databases of PubMed and Web of Science until 15th September 2022 was conducted, using search words [“bond strength”] and [“MDPB”] or [“methacryloyloxydodecylpyridinium bromide”]. Articles investigating the influence of MDPB inclusion on bone strength to dentin were included in this review. A total of 15 articles were included in this review. Sound dentin as well as demineralized dentin was commonly adopted as the testing dental substrate. The microtensile bond strength (µTBS) test was the predominant method employed. A solid conclusion can be drawn on the effect of MDPB application on the bond strength of dentin to adhesives and dental restorative materials. Its inclusion in the adhesive systems does not compromise in any way the bond strength, improves longevity and facilitates biocompatibility by exerting its antibacterial properties.
