Kinetics of batch cultivation of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans JCM 3863
P. Zlateva, E. Petrova
Abstract: The capability of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans to oxidize ferrous ions is well known and largely used in the metallurgy and wastewater treatment technologies. The application of bacteria in environmentally friendly technologies may fall in surroundings with high concentrations of iron and lead, because these conditions are toxic for the strain. In order to avoid inhibition of the bacterial action, it is necessary to adapt Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans JCM 3863to high initial concentrations of iron ions. The aim of this work is to propose a model, which describes the cell growth of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans JCM 3863 and oxidation of ferrous ions to ferric ions. The mathematical model would give a better idea about the processes that take place during adaptation of the strain to higher initial concentrations of substrate. This mathematical model describing the first two phases of the batch cultivation. Haldane model is used to represent the sigmoidal nature of the dependence of the specific growth rate of biomass on the substrate. It reflects the inhibitory effect of the substrate on the specific growth rate of biomass.
