Management of avascular necrosis of the femoral head - an overview
V. Sulyma, A. Travinskyi, V. Krasnovskiy, Y. Filiak
Abstract: The present overview is intended to highlight the progress made by researchers in the field of avascular necrosis of femoral head (ANFH) treatment management. ANFH is a multifactorial pathologic process that arises from an impairment of blood supply to the bone and secondary osteoarthritis in 70-80%. The ANFH is characterized by certain stages of progress. However, it is difficult to distinguish between them. The early diagnosis on the initial stages of ANFH is crucial for successful treatment and hip joint saving. The paper is focused on the conduction of every mentioned study by disclosing the methods and results. Conservative treatment offers a variety of non-operative options such as non-weight-bearing, bisphosphonates, anticoagulants, statins, and physiotherapeutic procedures. Surgical treatment falls into categories as either joint preservative or joint reconstructive procedures. The joint preservation operations include osteotomy, bone grafts, core decompression, implantation of tantalum rod and use of biologics or cellular therapies. Nevertheless, the key elements of ANFH management still requires further clarification.
