Application of biaxial testing techniques to hernia meshes
M. Kirilova-Doneva
Abstract: Planar biaxial tests are used to evaluate the appropriateness of hernia meshes. The tests describe their mechanical behavior before and after implantation. Except of the few articles however 2D investigation of the mechanical behavior of hernia meshes is still lacking. The aim of the study is to describe the application of biaxial testing techniques to hernia meshes. The recent 2D experimental results for hernia meshes, which revealed that meshes exhibit finite nonlinear stress-strain responses and undergo large strains, are presented. Comparison between studies however is difficult as different types of tests are preformed and various outcome parameters are reported. The necessity of generally accepted testing protocol is discussed.
