Abstract: Dear readers,

The current issues of “Series on Biomechanics” for 2013-vol.28, No.1-2 are devoted to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Academician Georgi Brankov - founder of organized research in biomechanics in Bulgaria. They include lectures and communications in the field of biomechanics, presented at the International scientific conference on mechanics (MECH2012), which was held in Sofia, Bulgaria, 19th -22nd November 2012. The conference was dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Institute of Mechanics to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) and 50 years organized research on Mechanics in BAS. The meeting was organized by the Institute of Mechanics in cooperation with the National Committee of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, the Union of Scientists in Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Society of Non Destructing Testing, the Bulgarian Society of Biomechanics and the Bulgarian Society of Biorheology. The Conference was scheduled in eleven scientific sessions including plenary lectures, oral and poster presentations. Scientists from Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Greece, France, Latvia, Russia, Ukraine, USA presented their recent achievements in the field of fluid mechanics, biomechanics, mechanics of multibody systems, mathematical modeling and numerical simulations, physico-chemical mechanics and solid mechanics.
The Conference contributed to the development of contacts and establishment of successful cooperation and ensured very good conditions for an extensive exchange of experience, views and personal contacts.
The current issues of “Series on Biomechanics” included two invited lectures: “Mechanobiology of cells and tissues” delivered by J.–F. Stoltz, Cor. Member of the French National Academy of Medicine and “The interaction of the dentofacial system with other systems of the human within the framework of the conception of Virtual Physiological Human” by Y.I. Nyashin, V.A. Lokhov, V.M. Tverier, M. Mesnard, delivered by Prof. Y. Nyashin from the Perm National Reseach Polytechnic University, Perm, Russia.
The papers of the current issues are focused on the following thematic areas: rehabilitation biomechanics, methodology providing analysis of the ankle foot complex movements; limb motor deficit estimation and the effect of rehabilitation using surface electromyographic signals recorded from corresponding muscles in stroke patients; a comparative analysis of the average human anthropometrical and mass characteristics of different nationalities; theoretical analysis and method of mechanics of biological tissues and systems: experimental testing and modelling; stress and deformation control by eigenstrain: application to mechanics of living and non-living tissues; molecular and cellular biomechanics; mathematical modelling and analysis of miRNA regulation; application of biomechanics in biotechnology – experimental testing and modeling; a literature review on the telemedical solutions in the field of biomechanics.
