Greetings for the 80th anniversary of William Popov
Series on Biomechanics - Stoyan Stoytchev
Abstract: On behalf of the Bulgarian Society of Biomechanics I warmly congratulate our colleague, William Popov, on the occasion of his 80th anniversary.
William Popov was born in the town of Pavlikeni on June 30, 1935. In 1960, he graduated from the Technical University (then the Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering), Sofia. In 1969, he defended his doctoral thesis at the Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute (Russia). In 1977 he was appointed Head of the Section "Biomechanics of the Vestibular System" at the Institute of Mechanics and Biomechanics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. He is the author of over 140 scientific publications in Bulgarian and foreign scientific journals and two patents. He has participated in numerous conferences and scientific events in Bulgaria, the Soviet Union, France, Poland, Cuba. He was secretary of the Fifth National Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in Varna in 1985. He is also the winner of the "Cyril and Methodius" medal. He still supervises graduate and PhD students in different disciplines - engineers, physicists, mathematicians. He is the author of eight (implemented in practice) innovations in the fields of metallurgy, traffic control, management of the health system, and selection of operators in the army. He retired in 2007 as associate professor at the Space Research Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
Keywords in the scientific works of Prof. Popov are: control system; man as a control system; modeling - conceptual, structural-functional, computer, fuzzy logic and control. In the field of biomechanics his main interests are focused on the control of the space orientation of moving objects for humans in normal, stressed and extreme situations. In this connection, William Popov participated in the development of special training protocols based on fundamental human trait - adaptability and training; ie, the possibility of programming and reprogramming of the biologically oriented softwear.
Since his retirement, William Popov has participated in several research projects manifesting remarkable civic activity - formation of two civic associations, authorship of related publications and media activities. In 2006 he became the winner of the "Golden Key" as a citizen, who has most actively used the Access to Public Information.
The Biomechanical Society maintains a permanent interest in the works of our colleague Popov devoted to the problems of biomechanics welcoming his continuing participation in conferences of the Bulgarian Society of Biomechanics. We believe that his advice and reviews, as well as his extensive experience in problems related to "human - environment", will contribute to the formulation of countless new ideas. We admire his energy and kindness and wish him many more years of good health and creative successes.
