Резюме: Objective: To investigate the long-term mechanical behaviour of a commonly used polypropylene mesh. Materials and methods: Commercially available knitted mesh Microval 2D Mesh was investigated. Specimens were cut along the knitting axis and across the knitting axis. An optical microscope evaluated morphological characteristics. Three types of mechanical tests were performed to investigate the mechanical properties: tensile test, relaxation test, and cyclic test at up to 100 repetitions. The relevant physiological loads were simulated. Results: All tests suggest that the mechanical properties of the mesh are orthotropic with two separate regions of experimental curve in the T direction - an initial low-stiffness region, which transitioned into a high-stiffness region. The visco-elastic behaviour of the mesh is presented by elongation after cyclic test which is between 76 % - 130%. Discussion: The results indicate that Microval exhibits a high level of deformation and high stiffness after cyclic test. Conclusion: The applied clinically relevant experiments shed light on mechanical behaviour of Microval which is one of preferred surgical mesh in Bulgaria.
